401k Contribution Limits

Below you will find the 401k Contribution Limits for employees, employers, and also for participants who will be at least 50 years old by the end of the calendar year. You should also consult the IRA contribution limits before completing your retirement plan.

As you can see, there was no cost of living adjustment from 2015, meaning that the 401k contribution limit for 2016 has stayed the same since last year.

As in previous years, plan participants who will be 50 years of age by the end of the year will be able to make a “catch-up” contribution. The catch-up contribution is an additional amount that those close to retirement are allowed to make. As you can see, the catch-up contribution limit will continue to be $6,000 for calendar year 2016.

Also note that the employer 401k contribution limit remains at 6% of the employee’s pre-tax salary. What this means is that an employee that has a gross salary of $100,000 will be able to contribute up to $18,000 during the year. If they will be at least 50 years old by the end of the year, they will be eligible to make a catch-up contribution up to $6,000; bringing their total annual contribution to $24,000.

If they contribute enough to gain their full 401k employer match, then their employer will kick in an additional $6,000 toward the employee’s retirement. This means that the employee in our example will put away $30,000 this year for retirement!

I’ve talked before about contributing enough to qualify for your full 401k employer match, so be sure to read that article to see why it is so vital to your financial health. Basically, I show how you can earn a return of 167% on your 401k before you begin investing!

With this type of return, and the generous amounts that we are allowed to set aside, contributing to a 401k should be at the top of your list of New Year Resolutions!

6 Free or Frugal Ways to Show Appreciation to Employees

As a result of the downturn in the economy, many companies have decided to do away with raises and bonuses. If you are a manager or a business owner who is searching for ways to demonstrate employee appreciation and employee recognition for all of the hard work performed by your workers throughout the year, without breaking the bank, then keep reading. This way you can ensure that your employees don’t choose a different career path once the recession is over!

Here are six simple things that you can do to demonstrate both employee recognition and employee appreciation:

Employee Appreciation for Free!

Offer Flexible Schedules

Not all employees need to work a 9-5 schedule. For those who have work responsibilities that can be handled during any hour, this may be a great benefit to them. Think about it, if you have a harsh commute when working a 9-5 shift, changing your hours to 7-3 would do much to reduce the stress and cost of your commute!

Allow Employees to Occasionally Work from Home

Telecommuting is becoming increasingly popular. If it isn’t possible to allow your employees to do this full-time, allow them to choose one day each week on which they can work from home.

This will not only save on energy, water, and all other costs associated with having more bodies in your building, but it will also save the employee on gas and wear & tear on their car (or paying for public transportation)!

Offer Opportunities for Additional Training

This would be a real benefit to employees, as they will have a chance to learn additional skills – or improve on what they already know – and position themselves for promotions and other opportunities!

This can be as simple as having members of your IT staff offer periodic training in MS Office, or other commonly-used software; or as complex as implementing a rotation program where employees are allowed to function in different positions and develop new skill sets!

Have Dress Down Days

Allowing your employees to dress down for one or several days a week can help to lighten the mood of a stressful work environment (of course this gesture is meaningless if you are not already being a godly employer)! It may also help to change the dress code to a more casual one – especially for those employees who do not need to meet with clients/customers.

Employee Recognition on a Budget!

Partner With Local Vendors

There are two ways that you can do this. First, you can leverage the buying power of your group of employees to get massive discounts for them – this can work for anything from cars to computers to tax preparation!

Second, you can barter with local vendors – providing your services to them in exchange for free services for your employees! Even if you aren’t able to give a raise or bonus, you can still provide a tangible benefit to your workers by providing them with a free session with a local tax preparer or financial consultant.

Another great way to show your appreciation for your employees is to bring in a local massage therapist once a week to provide free basic massages! Here are some other gift ideas to help you get started!

Celebrate Employees’ Achievements Each Month

Depending on the size of your workplace, this may need to be handled at the department level. Cater a basic lunch (a pizza party works for me) and give simple awards to your employees. You can have them vote on things such as “the most helpful coworker”, or “most dependable”, etc; then give out these awards once a month or quarter!

Broadcasting various customer/client accolades may add a nice touch as well. This would definitely be a great way to show employee recognition and employee appreciation for a minimal cost.

You can also use this as a time to acknowledge all of the birthdays that occurred during that month.

Set Up a Rec Room

If you have the space, set up a recreation room for your employees. You can include a TV, an air hockey game, pool table, or even a massage chair! You have to set a few guidelines on when this can be used, or you can just trust your employees to be responsible and get their work done in between their air hockey tournaments.


Remember, with whatever programs you implement, you should seek to do one of two things. Demonstrate your appreciation to your employees by providing a tangible benefit to them (more than just a “thank you”); or make the workplace more enjoyable by creating a more relaxed atmosphere.

Both of these goals can help to foster an attitude of loyalty in your employees, even at times when you are unable to offer raises and bonuses!

401k Advice – Stop Passing Up Free Money!

There are many things that we do in life that revolve around money. Much of the time we are working hard to earn more. Unfortunately, this desperation surrounding money doesn’t carry over to claiming our 401k employer match. People will do things out of character, work past the point of exhaustion, and even fall for obvious scams, all in pursuit of money.

Turning Down Free Money?

However, it seems like many of us are passing up free money with every paycheck! According to a recent study by Financial Engines, “39 % of [401 (k)] participants [are] not saving enough to receive the full employer match”! One of the most basic things that you can do is to quality for your 401k employer match.

The situation looks even worse for younger workers. The study reports that, “of participants under age 40, 47% failed to save enough to receive the full employer match.”

Most companies that offer 401 (k) plans will also offer a 401k employer match. What this means is that these companies will match the amount that you put into your plan up to a certain percentage of your salary. Let’s look at an example:

Let’s assume that your gross salary is $52,000 and you are paid every two weeks.You employer promises to match any contribution that you make to your 401 (k) dollar-for-dollar (100%), up to 6%!

You have more pressing concerns than saving for retirement, so you decide to start off slow at 1%. That means that with each paycheck you put aside $20 for retirement, and your company matches – giving you a total of $40!

Sounds pretty good, right? However, you just threw away $100 of FREE MONEY!!! How? Well, let’s take a look:

If you contributed 6% instead of just 1%, then your employer would match your $120 with $120 of FREE MONEY! Sounds a lot better than $20, huh? So, failing to contribute enough to receive the employer match (and only saving 1%), costs you $2,600 per year! Even more if you get a bonus, raise, or commissions!

I don’t know about you, but I would hate to have someone offer me $2,600 and I just light it on fire.

So, I guess you can see that I am in favor of everyone contributing enough in their 401 (k) plan to get the full employer match. If not, then you’re turning down FREE MONEY!!!

Actually, I’d go a step further and have every employee automatically signed up to contribute that amount, and have to opt out in order to change it. That would cause a lot more people to be aware of what their negligence costs them!

Want The 401k Employer Match, But Can’t Afford to Reduce Your Take Home Pay?

Keep in mind that a contribution to a traditional 401 (k) plan is made with pre-tax dollars. That means that taxes are not taken out of your pay until AFTER you make your contribution – leading to you paying less taxes!

Taking this example a little further will help us see this more clearly. Remember that I am making a few assumptions about your tax status in order to simplify the example:

Let’s say that your net pay is usually 25% lower than your gross, or $1,500. Contributing 6% of your salary ($120) will reduce your net pay to $1,410. This is a reduction of only $90 instead of the full $120 that you saved.

Actually, you managed to save $240 for your retirement by reducing your take home pay by only $90! That’s a return of 167% before you even started investing!!!

Is A 410k Employer Match In Your Future?

I hope you’ve read enough to convince you to take full advantage of your company’s 401 (k) match. The only thing worse than not getting the full match is using your 401(k) for credit card debt! Of course, in order to plan carefully you need to know the current 401k contribution limits, and even consider the prospect of a 401k rollover!

Tipping Etiquette: Why Do We Pay Tips for Certain Services?

Many people are searching for sensible answers when it comes to the subject of tipping etiquette. Since this is a personal finance website, I’m sure you click on this article expecting to see a list of reasons why we should tip; or at the very least, a list of suggested tips by profession. Sorry to disappoint you, but I am just asking a question that I have wondered since I was a kid.

Tipping Etiquette Gone Wild

A Meal to Remember:

During our honeymoon in Mexico a few years ago (wow, it’s been about 5 years – where does the time go?) my wife and I were attacked by a two-man Mariachi band (accordion and bass) at a restaurant. They were going around to the tables singing and playing badly. Eventually, they made their way to our table and began to sing and play badly (did you think they were going to improve by the time they got to us?). mariachi photo credit: Foxtongue

We pretty much ignored them and figured that they were the best that the restaurant could afford to hire. Once they were finished, we expected them to move on to the next victim table, but instead the leader stopped and looked at me and said, “WE PLAY FOR TEEPS!”  😯 (that’s “tips” for all of you non-Mariachi speakers – for those who don’t know me, I like to imitate people occasionally) and held out his hand.

I can’t remember exactly what I gave him, but I’m sure it was the lowest denomination that Mexico has ever seen (based on my memory of the look of disgust that was on his face)! I guess I wasn’t following proper tipping etiquette.

Why Does Tipping Etiquette Force Us To Reward Bad Service?

Because the restaurant was too cheap to pay this “band” a living wage, and they had to survive on teeps! Why does tipping etiquette force us to pay certain service providers tips? I mean, I’m used to hearing all of the common reasons, such as:

  • Many waiters earn less than the minimum wage, and a large part of their income is derived from tips.
  • A waiter may be required to tip other coworkers (bartenders, busboys, etc), regardless of if they receive a tip.
  • To show gratitude for good or great service.
  • To encourage the employee to continue their good service.
  • Hairdressers and barbers rent their booths/chairs.
  • The cab driver got you to your destination in one piece.
  • Blah, blah, blah Etc, etc, etc

So…even after hearing those arguments, I still have the same question. Why am I expected to pay someone a tip? Why am I expected to supplement a cheap employer who pays their workers $4/hr, and then forces that employee to supplement their underpaid coworkers? Why should I pay extra because someone does their job? Shouldn’t someone work hard for the pay that they agreed to?

Tipping Etiquette Helps To Supplement Low Wages?

If it’s a matter of supplementing a low income, there is a much better way to handle this. The employer can just pay a fair wage to all workers and, IF NECESSARY, charge a slightly higher price for their product/service. A restaurant should not expect their customers to pay a fair price for their meal & service, and then pay a 15 – 20% surcharge because they (the restaurant) are too cheap to pay a living wage to the waiters!

The argument about rewarding/assuring good service falls short in my mind as well. A paying customer should receive good service automatically. Good service should not be a reward for a high tip, nor should terrible service be the punishment for a low one. And if it is truly about “gratuity” then it shouldn’t be automatically included with any meals – and you certainly shouldn’t be arrested for not paying a tip!!!

It’s to the point now where a waiter will give terrible service, and the customers are still discussing how much of a tip to leave! This is insane! Most people pay tips out of guilt – we know that it is an expectation and we feel like cheap jerks if we don’t!

The customer is already paying for the good or service and will many times reward good service with repeat business. If I enjoy the food at a particular restaurant, or the cleanliness and service of a hotel, then I will make it a point to visit that establishment as often as my budget allows.

A Better Alternative To Tipping Etiquette

I believe that the employer should just pay a fair wage to their employees. I also believe that great service is rewarded by both a positive report to the manager/owner (so that the employee benefits) and repeat business (so that the owner benefits). This way the employee earns real money and also has the opportunity for raises, bonuses and promotions – based on all of the good reports from satisfied customers.

Also, the business would have a repeat customer that is glad to spend their money in their establishment – because they are satisfied with the product and level of service. This sounds like a win-win situation to me!

Before I get a ton of angry comments and emails, let me explain a few things:

  • I DO pay tips for good service.
  • I pay EXCELLENT tips for excellent service. I have paid tips of between 75 and 100% on a number of occasions (usually on smaller bills, of course).
  • While I believe that waiters should be paid a fair wage, I realize that it is not their fault that our current system is illogical.
  • My tips are based solely on service – I DO NOT CARE that a waiter is underpaid – bad service = NO TIP!!!

So after thinking this matter over, I still don’t like the idea of tips and I think there is a better way!
